Job Openings: Accounting Director, Full-Time, Alpena (permanent); Oscoda (temporary)

Days:Monday through Friday (or as required to meet the needs of the department and members)
Hours:Exempt position - typically 40 hours

Duties:

***Position will be temporarily assigned to Oscoda until the completion of the new headquarter location and will be reassigned to the new Alpena headquarters***

The primary purpose of this position is to assist Northland Area Federal Credit Union in living out its Service Mission, “To be our members’ most trusted financial partner.” One of the primary means to achieve this end is to develop a highly effective team of employees and develop each employee to their highest potential through coaching and leadership. Responsible for ensuring that outstanding service is delivered to both internal and external members. In addition, this position supervises and coordinates the activities of employees maintaining accounting and other records in accordance with accounting standards and government regulations.

  1. Ensure team delivers service to both internal and external members that are in alignment with the credit union’s Service Promises

  2. Develop each employee to their highest potential by identifying their areas for improvement and appropriately coaching, training or correcting the employees’ performance

  3. Recognize employees who perform at a high level

  4. Hold employees accountable for their performance, attitude and behavior

  5. Meet with each on an ongoing basis to review performance, set goals and develop plans to improve employee’s performance.

  6. Demonstrate enthusiastic support of corporate mission, core values and long-term objectives

  7. Performs job duties within our bylaws, regulations, Board of Directors policies, established internal and external service standards and our work procedures

  8. Train and supervise accounting staff. Assign, direct, coordinate and review work performed by staff

  9. Maintains a highly motivated, well-trained staff maintaining effective employee relations

  10. Evaluates employee’s performance in regards to position requirements and expectations

  11. Ensures financial statements are maintained in accordance with good accounting standards and practices

  12. Responsible for maintaining procedures and adhering to government regulations

  13. Ensure compliance with ACH regulations

  14. Use ALM models to forecast financials including analysis of interest rate risk

  15. Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and provide information and analysis of expense and revenue accounts

  16. Responsible for various governments reporting requirements including the quarterly call report

  17. Ensure all general ledgers are reconciled on a monthly basis

  18. Reconcile and monitor all credit union bank accounts

  19. Responsible for development of Branch statistical report

  20. Approve closure of share draft accounts in overdraft situations and approve restatement of these accounts

  21. Back up all positions in the accounting department

Requirements:

Bachelors' degree in accounting or other related field of study; or comparable relevant experience. 

 

Requires a professional demeanor and a positive attitude about credit union policies and procedures. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision. Position requires a high level of interpersonal skills, as well as, excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have a strong working knowledge of regulations impacting accounting principles and practices. proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, have a strong ability to think analytically and be able to prioritize and manage interruptions throughout the workday without losing efficiency or productivity.

Misc Comments:

Typical indoor office environment; must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time in a sitting position. Must be able to occasionally stand and move about or traverse inside the office to access cabinets, files, office machines, etc. Requires continuous communication to others and exchanging of information and repetitive use of hand/fingers, such as keyboard typing, telephone and use of office equipment. Requires frequent written communication and handling stress/emotions. Must be able to continuously think analytically, concentrate on tasks and remember names/detail.
